Minnesota's Miranda ties MLB mark with 12 at-bat hit streak

Minnesota Twins third baseman Jose Miranda tied a Major League Baseball record on Saturday by recording a hit in his 12th consecutive time at bat before his streak ended.

The 26-year-old Puerto Rican playmaker singled off Houston pitcher Hunter Brown in the fourth inning at Target Field in Minneapolis.

That pulled him level with three others who managed hits in 12 at-bats in a row -- Detroit's Walt Dropo in 1952, Boston's Pinky Higgins in 1938 and Johnny Kling of the Chicago Cubs in 1902.

History was at hand when Miranda returned to the plate with two outs in the sixth inning to once again face right-hander Brown.

But Miranda smacked a 2-ball, 2-strike pitch into the glove of Astros left-fielder Chas McCormick for the inning-ending third out to snap his epic run.

Miranda had reached base in 13 plate appearances in a row. He was hit by a pitch in his first plate appearance on Saturday, taking it out of counting in the at-bats streak, before making two singles on Saturday to equal history.

Miranda went 4-for-4 on Friday as a designated hitter with a home run and a double and he was 5-for-5 on Thursday after making a hit in his final at-bat on Wednesday.
